Some Notes on EZ’s Baby Sweater on 2 Needles

This is number 5554 on Ravelry’s list of completed Elizabeth Zimmermann’s Baby Sweater on 2 Needles. It is practically seamless.  I grafted the underarms.  The Gull pattern is quickly mastered, having a 4 row 7 stitch repeat.

I’m offering this as a class at The Knit Shoppe in Aurora and so this post serves to record my notes to expand upon rather cryptic instructions in The Knitter’s Almanac.

Placing markers for the first and last 4 stitches helps to remember to switch to garter stitch for the placket.  I placed 3 buttonholes at the top, in rows 3, 19, and 35.

Ideas for modifying the sweater include replacing the lace with stockinette, striping different colors in the yoke, and using a picot bind-off.  I haven’t even looked at all the variations in Ravelry yet.

3 sweet buttons

Thanks, Elizabeth, for a wonderful time.  Looking forward to knitting with you again.

  1. I need to make a baby sweater (for a boy!) and want to make this. Lace just isn’t right for a boy, is it? But when I do eventually make this I’ll remember you had notes for it. Thank you, and wish I could be in your class!
